During Art we read Where the Wild Things Are by Maurice Sendak. The kindergartners loved to make the noises of the monsters and were encouraged to point out textures they saw on the monsters. We talked about what textures are and how we can show them in our art. Students then began drawing their wild thing with crayons, making sure the not color in their monster. They then used different textures to create this furry, slimy, rough, or scaly monster. The next week, we used watercolors to fill in our monsters and give them a nice background. Students were encouraged to use multiple textures and to create the monster's home in the background.
